Adventures of an Irishman travelling, mainly by road, in Africa, being caught up in various wars, escaping with his life several times, only to begin all over again. It is the story of corruption, endemic in every facet of society to the detriment of many millions of honest people.

I don't remember why I bought this book but I just got around to reading it and I am glad that I did. My guess is that the author is not an experienced author but it was a very interesting read. How he survived all of the things that he did is quite remarkable. I would be reluctant to put the things in the book that he did, but perhaps that is what made the book so interesting. It sounds like the adventures of Bourne, but that was fiction; this actually happened. Not my cup of tea for a vacation, but for a thrilling read, I highly recommend this book.Product details

Life of Brian in Africa Mr Brian C O'Donnell Frank Sweeney 9781477537664 Books Reviews
Well, for me to review this book, I had to break my first rule of the game which is never to review a book by an author I know personally …
much less a friend, which Brian has been for many a year. Well, let me get that out of the way and also say that I approached this book with a little trepidation not so much because Brian is a friend but because the early indications were that this is a ‘man’s book.’
I was pleasantly surprised. Brian has a light touch and a wry (and dry) humour which runs through this entire piece. This book details in a ‘no punches pulled’ manner narrates Brian’s exploits in many African countries during the 70’s when Africa was a powder keg of political intrigue, toppling governments, civil wars and generally dangerous situations for a young man from Donegal, Ireland. Brian’s writing style is sparse and direct and a reader could be excused for feeling that much has been left unsaid … or unwritten … in this case. However, as I settled into the narrative, his style grew on me and I was left using my imagination to guess what, in fact, had been ‘unsaid.’ This was obviously his intention and contributed much to my enjoyment of this book. His humour is ever present and I smiled at the skeletal narrative he employed as he ‘detailed’ his encounters with various young women whose paths crossed his. Ian Fleming he is not … but in a gentle and surprising way he says so much without saying a lot. However, Brian pulls no punches when describing his harrowing adventures … being washed downriver in an overturned jeep, being attacked and taken prisoner by hostile tribesmen, being jailed in a dangerous fleapit of a cell, his adventures in ivory and currency smuggling … you see where this is going. This man has led a full and adventurous life and we are grateful he has taken the time and has the ability to tell us about it.
A great read and a great gift for the armchair explorer in your life
This is a great read if you want to read about a life lived to the full, hard to put down once you have started and very recommendable to anyone looking for a well written book of an adventure filled life.
An amazing book, yet very much "down to earth", literally speaking
Written by someone who truly *was there*, much more of an adventurer than a professional author really.
Highly recommended and Africa is in deed wild!
