Join Helen and Paris in Volume II of their epic adventure.

The star-crossed lovers have escaped Mycenae, but they are not safe yet. Still in hostile waters, every port from the Greek mainland to the Old World presents a risk of exposure. The wrath of Menelaus and Agamemnon follows in their wake, but Helen keeps faith that her love for Paris is ordained, trusting to the prophecy of her childhood.

When the Fates force a costly detour to Egypt, Helen and Paris are placed at the mercies of the Egyptian crown and temple. Pharaoh is dying, and the line of succession is anything but secure. The pair soon find themselves embroiled in local politics, and the High Priest of Amun-Re, troubled by conflicting omens, takes a dangerous interest in the forbidden lovers. In order to escape the Two Lands, Paris and Helen will have to decide how many traditions they are willing to forsake in the name of love.

But the sands of the hourglass are running out. Clytemnestra, hell-bent on revenge, has hired a former sell-sword to retrieve her twin at all costs. Little does the queen know, this Scylax is a man conflicted, torn between his allegiance to, and hatred for, royalty. He is a raptor, and once his prey is in sight, he never misses…

The Princess of Prophecy, Heroes of the Trojan War, Volume II

The Princess of Prophecy Heroes of the Trojan War Volume II edition by Aria Cunningham Romance eBooks

It is sometimes overlooked that the story of the Trojan war, at its heart, is one of the oldest tales of forbidden love in western civilization. As such, we tend to pay too much attention to the warriors in the story (Achilles, Odysseus, Hector, Aeneas, etc) and not enough attention to the 2 people @ the very center of the myth: Helen of Sparta and Paris of Troy. In the tradition of Mary Renault, Aria Cunningham sets forth to remedy that oversight and (in the words of Ezra Pound) "make it new."

Books 1 & 2 of this series delve into the backstory of the myth that precedes BOOK I of the ILIAD. In doing so, the author expounds on lesser known parts of the story, such as the sisterhood of Clytemnestra & Helen, Helen's abduction by Theseus when she was a little girl, the curse that Paris carried with him from the time of his birth & a supposed detour to Egypt enroute back to Troy when Helen escaped Mycenae. In doing thus, the book gives of a vivid presentation of 2 characters who are torn between the dual principles of love & duty to country. Instead of 2 juvenile lovers eloping against the wishes of everyone else, we feel sympathy for their plight.

Much of this novel takes place within Egypt. This may come as a surprise to many readers, but there is at least one version of the myth (if not more?) which held that Paris & Helen went to Egypt instead of back to Troy. Paris & Helen interact with historical figures from this time period in Egypt, which adds a depth to the story not seen elsewhere. It also allows the reader a portal to Egyptian mythology, which is a fascinating topic in & of itself. Cunningham offers us just a subtle hint of the gods interacting in the affairs of man, kind of like a spice used in gourmet cuisine which kicks up the flavor of the meal ever so slightly.

For those who are curious about the story of the Trojan war but who may feel intimidated by reading Homer straight from the spigot, this trilogy is an excellent way to access the myth in a non-threatening manner. For those who have read the ILIAD and the ODYSSEY and the AENEID, these books will augment your understanding for & appreciation of the story. As always, these books are especially recommended for fans & alumni of the author's alma mater, the University of Southern California as well as fans & alumni of Michigan State University!!

The Princess of Prophecy Heroes of the Trojan War Volume II edition by Aria Cunningham Romance eBooks Reviews

I patiently waited for the second book in this series on the Trojan War. The first was a new take on a historical classic, that focused on the women, giving them depth and character. In this second book in the series, Helen and Paris start their escape from Mycenae to Troy, but they are first derailed to Egypt. Paris seeks to tactfully continue on the journey, but Helen seeks a cleansing ritual that will allow her to move on from the horrors of her past.

I greatly enjoyed the mix in of Egyptian history and thought in general it was written excellently. Full of historical figures and facts it reflects a historian weaving the past to create a clear picture of the world at that time, while still having a feel very much like a well crafted novel. The story progressed well, but it is just another in a long saga, so readers still will be desperately waiting for the return to Troy and the epic war to begin. I found less passion in this story as Paris and Helen were often apart, which made the romance side weak, but the story still had a strong purpose and strength. It was a character building novel in that both Paris' and Helen's emotions were truly exposed and the humanness of the pair is deeply portrayed. Secondary characters are also done well, and the reader makes strong connections to them as well. Finally, this cover is remarkably better than the first. It is pretty and more representative of the world altering beauty that Helen is famous for being.

The third in the series is planned to be released in the Spring of 2016, and I will hopefully be one of the first to read it as well.
In Volume II of this saga, we follow the lovers as they make their escape from Mycenae to Troy. Desperate to make it there before Menelaus and Agamemnon can catch up with them, Paris and Helen find themselves in a precarious position when they are delayed in Egypt after attempting to stop for supplies. With the death of Pharaoh eminent, Paris and Helen find themselves caught up in battle for succession, local politics and traditions. Throw in a dash of sibling rivalry, a hired assassin, a power hungry king, and an empire on the brink of war, and you get the exciting tale that is The Princess of Prophecy.

After finishing The Princess of Sparta, I was excited for the next installment of this series, and Cunningham doesn't disappoint. This book was just as good as the first, if not better. Cunningham does an amazing job of weaving together historical events and giving them a human touch. While the narrative is based on historical facts, it does not possess a dry, scholarly feel. Her story lines have many moving parts that she artfully weaves together to keep it moving forward and keep the reader interested. Her characters are well developed and dynamic, and she has a talent for reinventing some of the most iconic historical figures, and humanizing them, turning them into relatable human beings.

I enjoyed the couple's foray into Ancient Egypt, one of the most fascinating civilizations in the history of our world. I think when we study these ancient cultures that it is easy to compartmentalize them and forget that they were real civilizations that existed at the same time and interacted with each other. I loved seeing iconic figures, such as Nefertiti, come to life within the pages of this novel. This is definitely a "middle" book, meaning that while Cunningham does a good job moving the story forward, readers should not expect any real resolution. According to end notes, we should expect the third installment, The Princess of Troy, sometime in Spring, 2016. I for one, will be looking forward to it.

One more final note, I have to say that the cover art for this installment is much better than the previous one, which looked a bit like a cheesy Harlequin romance novel you would find in the discount bin. I like this cover much more, and I think it is a much better representation of the quality story that is The Princess of Prophecy. Get your hands on this series. It is well worth the read.

*Note I received a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.
so good!!!!!!
Great story line! Love this series
Beautifully written and engaging. Breathes life and realism into the Homerian characters and the reasoning behind their legendary stories. Well worth reading.
